Desfile de Second Line con los Pigeon Town Steppers Social & Pleasure Club , Nueva Orleans, Luisiana 17 de abril de 2022
He visitado Nueva Orleans en tres ocasiones. Todas me han permitido conocer aspectos nuevos de esta ciudad llena de misterios y sorpresas. Cada casa, rincón, esquina, templo o iglesia, puesto, recoveco y especialmente cada persona, es un regalo sorpresa que ofrece un portal hacia las emociones más profundas.
Mi primera visita fue a mis veinte años, la cual despertó mis ganas de conocerla aún más. En la segunda, veinte años después, quise absorber toda la música posible y conocer el barrio histórico del Faubourg Tremé, icono cultural afroamericano, centro de la cultura criolla y las bandas de viento-metales. Entonces, pasé tres días en el festival de Jazz de Nueva Orleans donde conocí de grandes músicos. También conocí la Frenchman Street, una de las áreas que más me gustaron del French Quarter y donde se encuentran clubes emblemáticos como el Maison, el Bamboula's, el Café Negril y el Spotted Cat Music Club.
En mi más reciente estancia en Nueva Orleans tuve la fortuna de ir con mi familia y como en las dos ocasiones anteriores, sentí que me faltaron días para conocer, ver, escuchar, oler, tocar, saborear, sentir y experimentar. Nueva Orleans es como un universo que se expande en cada paso.
El Rey Hollis Burton, nos paseó por la ciudad, el Tremé y los diques que terminaron de destrozar el barrio del Tremé durante la inundación del huracán Katrina.
El domingo de pascua de resurrección, acudimos a un servicio religioso en la iglesia bautista Greater St Stephen Full Gospel Church a escuchar el sermón de Dr. T. Delbert Robinson (Pastor Rob) y a escuchar un coro de Gospel, tanto el pastor como el coro de Gospel, lograron llegar a lo más profundo de las emociones de los que asistimos, al grado de que salimos del servicio en llanto de catarsis, redención y esperanza, como debe ser un domingo de resurrección.
Seguido del emotivo servicio religioso, nos fuimos al Second Line, un desfile con bandas de viento-metales (brass bands) organizado por los SAPC’s (Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs) de Nueva Orleans. La Primera Línea (First Line) le corresponde al SAPC, en este caso el “Pigeon Town Steppers Social & Pleasure Club”, y la Segunda Línea le corresponde a la gente que sigue el desfile disfrutando de la música, el baile, haciendo comunidad y apoyando su economía (los vecinos montan puestos de bebidas y comida para los participantes del desfile).
Nuestro guía el Rey Hollis Burton, había sido en 2017, Rey de los Treme Sidewalk Steppers, y encargado de transmitir las tradiciones y la riqueza histórica, cultural y musical de su barrio y su gente en el barrio del Treme. Hollis le pasó su reinado el siguiente año al famoso músico de jazz y hip-hop “Trombone Shorty”.
Desfilamos por espacio de cuatro horas aproximadamente. Bailamos, comimos, bebimos, disfrutamos de la música y convivimos con una comunidad vibrante y generosa que de manera inmediata y sin presentación alguna, nos dio su cariño, su hospitalidad, y nos abrazaron con su cultura y sus tradiciones. Fue una experiencia extraordinaria.

Second Line Parade with the Pigeon Town Steppers Social & Pleasure Club

I have visited New Orleans on three occasions. In each one I have discovered new and different angles of this city so full of mysteries and surprises. Every house, nook, corner, stall, temple or church, and especially every person, is a surprise that offers a portal to the deepest emotions.
My first visit was when I was in my twenties, and it only awakend my eagerness to know more about suh a magical place. On my second visit, twenty years later, had the clear intention of grasping as much music as possible and getting to know the Faubourg Tremé (Treme district). The historic African-American cultural neighborhood, center of Creole culture and brass bands. I spent 3 days at the New Orleans Jazz festival where I had the opportunity to enjoy great musicians. Also during that visit I got to know Frenchman Street, one of the areas that I liked the most in the French Quarter, and where you can find awesome spots like the Maison, Bamboula's, Café Negril and the Spotted Cat Music Club.
On my most recent trip to NOLA, I was fortunate enough to come with my family, and like it happened on my previous trips, I felt I didn’t have enough time to fully know, hear, smell, touch, taste, feel and experience. New Orleans is like a universe that expands with every step you take.
King Hollis Burton toured us through the city, the Tremé and the levees that flooded and destroyed the Tremé during Hurricane Katrina.
On Easter Sunday, we attended a religious service at the Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Church where we listen to a sermon by Dr. T. Delbert Robinson (Pastor Rob) and enjoyed a spectacular Gospel choir, both the pastor and the Gospel choir, penetrated so deep into our emotions, that we left the service in tears of redemption, hope and catharsis, as it should happen on Easter Sunday.
After leaving the religious service, we attended the Second Line parade. A "Second Line" is a parade with brass bands organized by the SAPC's (Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs) of New Orleans. The First Line is for the SAPC, in this case the Pigeon Town Steppers Social & Pleasure Club, and the Second Line is for the people who follow the parade enjoying the music, the dancing, engaging in community and supporting its economy (the neighbors set up food and drink stalls for the parade participants).
Our guide Hollis, had been the King of the Treme Sidewalk Steppers in 2017, and was in charge of passing along the traditions and the historical, cultural and musical heritage of his neighborhood and its people in the Treme. Hollis passed his reign the following year to famed jazz and hip-hop musician "Trombone Shorty."
We marched on the Second Line for approximately four hours. We danced, ate, drank, enjoyed music and engaged with a vibrant and generous community that immediately and without any introduction, gave us their love and hospitality, and embraced us with their culture and traditions. It was an amazing experience.
